The Giant Jam Sandwich
Easy Homemade Strawberry Jam

Homemade Butter

This recipe was inspired by The Giant Jam Sandwich . To learn more about the book and to see all our Giant Jam Sandwich activities, click here

The first step to making a Giant Jam Sandwich (or Regular Sized Jam Sandwich in this case) is the bread. If you want a completely homemade sandwich, try our recipe for Honey Oat Quick Bread. If not, any sandwich bread that you have will work.

The second step is the butter. Making homemade butter is an easy activity to do with kids. To make it, you simply put heavy cream in a jar and shake it vigorously until it forms butter and buttermilk. Try adding a pinch of sea salt, honey, chopped basil, cinnamon, garlic, or any other seasonings that sound delicious to your finished butter.

Young Readers in the Kitchen

The best part of this recipe is that kids can do everything; it requires no cooking, or cutting, just pour and shake! The only possible problem is stamina: Kids might not be able to shake the jar for the full five minutes or so that it takes to form butter. You can take turns shaking, or roll the jar back and forth to each other on the floor for a break!

Ingredients

  • Heavy cream, at room temperature
  • Jar with a screw on top

  1. Fill the jar 2/3 full with room temperature heavy cream.

  2. Screw the lid on tight and shake, shake, shake the jar.
  3. Every so often take the lid off to see what is happening to the cream. At first it will turn to whipped cream, then after even more shaking a ball of butter will form floating in buttermilk. Pour off the buttermilk, and you have butter!
