The Stray Dog

by Marc Simont

The Stray Dog is the happy story of how a family finds a friend, and a dog finds a home. The words are simple and few, with the the story being told largely through the bright, expressive watercolor illustrations that intensify the feelings of puppy love the text describes.

In 1983, Mr. Simont heard his friend tell the story of how his family adopted a stray dog and the tale stuck with him, eventually becoming this wonderful Caldecott Honor book.  Even the youngest of readers will love the details included in the illustrations and feel the sorrows and joys the family and Willy the dog go through on their adventure of becoming a family. Loving and gentle, yet filled with humor throughout, this is a gem of a book!
