Folk Art Wind Sculpture

The wind blew. As the tale unfolds, the titular, rather cheeky wind collects, among other things, an umbrella, a top hat, a judge's wig, some scarves, and a handful of letters, blowing the collection through the village with the items' respective owners frantically chasing after them. I'm sure seeing that sight out of your window would be quite entertaining! 

Thus, this week's project is a found art wind sculpture, reminiscent of the art of Vollis Simpson. It is a sort of silent wind chime, fashioned of things from around the house or yard, or out of the recycling bin! This is a fun project to work on together with your reader. Some of the steps are for adult hands only but there is plenty of fun to be done by the younger hands as well.

Folk Art Wind Sculptures

Supplies

• Plastic lid – we used one from an oatmeal container
• Yarn or string
• Items from your recycling bin
• Hole punch or awl

1. Punch 4 holes around the perimeter of the plastic lid, equal distance apart.  
2. Cut 2 lengths of yarn to use for hanging the sculpture. Tie one end of one length in one hole then tie the other end through the hole directly opposite. 
3. Repeat with the other length of yarn in the other two holes.
4. Cut lengths of yarn to use for hanging the items on the wind sculpture. Tie one of the pieces of yarn to each of the items from the recycling bin, then hang each item through one of the holes on the plastic lid (For our fifth item, the foil cupcake liner in the center, we punched a hole in one side, tied a length of string to it, then taped it to center the plastic lid with Scotch tape). Hang the sculpture from a hook or limb where the wind will make it dance!
